All WCPSS schools provide AIG services to identified students. Here at River Bend, our services are delivered in a number of different ways.
Reading / English Language Arts
For students identified as AIG in Reading, River Bend Middle provides placement in a cluster-grouped Language Arts class for grades 6-8. Cluster grouping allows the ELA teacher to more easily differentiate instruction for gifted students, as well as ensuring that students have opportunities to collaborate with peers of similar ability. Additionally, cluster grouping of identified AIG students in these ELA classes allows for a greater level of consultation and collaboration between the classroom teacher and the AIG teacher to ensure that our AIG students are being served appropriately.

Mathematics **
AIG identified Math students are also served through cluster grouping and accelerated placement. Incoming AIG Math identified 6th graders are placed in Common Core Math 6+, which actually encompasses all of "regular" 6th grade Math, and roughly half of the 7th grade curriculum. As seventh graders, they move to Common Core Math 7+, which allows them to move through the remaining 7th grade curriculum and all of the "regular" 8th grade curriculum. This accelerated path means that as 8th graders, AIG Math students have the opportunity to take Common Core Math 1 (formerly Algebra 1) for high school credit. In some cases, qualifying 6th graders can be placed in Compacted Math 6+/7+. This extremely rigorous course contains roughly 2.5 years of math curriculum, and is offered to students with an EVAAS score of 97 or greater, and a previous year Math EOG score of Level 5.
Cluster grouping is used in Math classes as well, which means that AIG students are grouped together, allowing for rigorous learning opportunities and student collaboration. Additionally, as noted above in the English Language Arts section, the cluster grouping allows the AIG teacher and classroom teachers to work together more effectively to meet the needs of our gifted math students.
**Available math courses and placement guidelines are determined by the school district. Information above is for the 2019-2020 school year. If/when new courses or placement guidelines are implemented by Wake County, those changes will be noted. Find out more by visiting the Middle School Math website at this link: www.wcpss.net/msmath

Additional AIG Services
While the bulk of AIG services at River Bend are delivered through cluster grouping and advanced course placements as described above, the AIG teacher may also "push in" to classes to provide additional enrichment opportunities. The AIG teacher might facilitate a Socratic Seminar or debate with a cluster-grouped Language Arts class, or provide an extension lesson or project to one of our clustered math classes. Additionally, the AIG teacher regularly plans with our math and language arts teachers and provides extension and enrichment materials as needed. There are also occasions when small groups of students are pulled out for enrichment or extension of a certain unit or project.
